What to bring

  • Covered shoulders and knees — strictly enforced at the Vatican (St. Peter's & Sistine Chapel); carry a scarf.
  • Only a small bag: large bags must be checked at the Vatican and aren't allowed at the Colosseum (airport-style screening, no glass bottles).

Plans & details

The plan

  • Vatican — St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Suggested approach: tour the Vatican Museums, end at the Sistine Chapel, then walk over to St. Peter's Basilica.
  • Trevi Fountain.
  • Colosseum — the notes call for the 'Full Experience with Underground.'

Where you are staying

Hotel
DoubleTree by Hilton Rome Monti — night 2 of 3.

Worth knowing

  • The Colosseum (the Flavian Amphitheatre), completed in A.D. 80, seated more than 50,000 people. The 'Underground' is the hypogeum — the tunnels beneath the arena floor.
  • The Sistine Chapel ceiling and 'The Last Judgment' were painted by Michelangelo (the ceiling, 1508–1512). St. Peter's Basilica is the largest church in the world; Michelangelo designed its dome.
  • The Trevi Fountain is a Baroque masterpiece completed in 1762. Tradition says a coin tossed over your shoulder guarantees a return to Rome.
  • The Vatican Museums and the Colosseum require timed tickets bought in advance. St. Peter's and the Sistine Chapel enforce a dress code — shoulders and knees covered.
