Italy
Etiquette and useful phrases.
Etiquette
- Italians value “bella figura” — dressing and presenting well; smart clothes are noticed, and shoulders and knees must be covered in churches.
- Coffee customs: a cappuccino is a morning drink, not an after-meal one; an espresso standing at the bar costs less than sitting down.
- Meals are unhurried and dinner is late (from about 8 pm). A coperto (cover charge) is normal; tip modestly beyond it by rounding up.
- Greet shopkeepers with “Buongiorno” or “Buonasera.” Do not sit on monument steps in Rome or Venice — it can be fined.
Tipping
- Tipping is modest and not obligatory — Italians tip little.
- Restaurants: check the bill first for a “coperto” (cover charge, ~€1–€3 per person) and sometimes “servizio” (service). Beyond those, rounding up or leaving a few euros is plenty; 10% is generous.
- Cafés & bars: pay at the register and leave small coins; an espresso standing at the bar costs less than seated.
- Taxis: round up the fare.
- Hotels: €1–€2 per bag; €1–€2 per day for housekeeping.
- Guides & drivers: a few euros per person for a good tour.
