Hungary
Etiquette and useful phrases.
Etiquette
- A well-known custom: Hungarians traditionally do not clink beer glasses — a habit dating to 1849; many still keep it, though it is now relaxed.
- Thermal-bath etiquette: shower before entering, and follow the posted rules for each pool.
- Tipping is about 10% — check whether a service charge is already on the bill before adding more.
- Use Bolt or a marked Főtaxi rather than flagging down an unmarked taxi.
Tipping
- Currency is the forint (HUF); tip in forint cash, not euros.
- Restaurants: about 10% is standard — but check the bill first, as a service charge (szervízdíj) is increasingly added; don't double-tip.
- Cafés & bars: round up or about 10%.
- Taxis: round up roughly 10%.
- Hotels: 500–1,000 HUF per bag; about 500 HUF per day for housekeeping.
